Development Education Centre's Successful 34th Annual Convention Advocates for Women's Participation in Governance

Enugu, Nigeria - The 34th Annual Convention of Development Education Centre (DEC) held at the corporate headquarters in Independence Layout, Enugu, on the 16th of December 2022, was a resounding success. The convention brought together major stakeholders, esteemed guests, participants, students, media, and friends of the organization from various parts of Nigeria, including the South East and Kogi and Benue from the North Central states.

With the theme "Advocating for Effective Legislation to Promote Women's Participation in Governance," DEC emphasized its commitment to women's empowerment and their active involvement in community decision-making processes. The convention served as a platform to highlight DEC's achievements over the past 34 years and discuss plans for the future.

Chief Emeka Odo, the Chairman of DEC's Board of Directors and Chairman of the convention, commended the organization for its exceptional work in developing and empowering communities, particularly focusing on the education of women and inclusive governance. He acknowledged DEC's growth over the years, making it the most reputable non-governmental organization (NGO) in the South East and neighboring states.

Founded in 1986, DEC has been at the forefront of empowering women for socio-economic emancipation. Through initiatives promoting access to quality healthcare, education, skill acquisition, entrepreneurial development, and financial support for economic growth, DEC has made a significant impact in the lives of countless women.

Dr. Cecilia Asogwa, the Executive Director of DEC, received special recognition for her unwavering dedication, courage, and commitment to taking the organization to new heights. Under her leadership, DEC has provided education, skill development, and scholarships to indigent students and out-of-school young mothers, enabling them to complete their education up to WAEC Level. The chairman expressed gratitude to the Trustees of Sir Fidelis Asogwa Education Foundation for their bursary awards, which have supported over 600 deserving students in the Nsukka cultural zone.

During her address, Dr. Asogwa highlighted the challenges faced by DEC in the past year, including the sit-at-home order and insecurity in the South East, which impacted the organization's programs. Despite these obstacles, DEC made significant progress in its core areas of operation.

DEC's policy thrust includes promoting inclusive governance structures, and Dr. Asogwa proudly shared that 20 out of 25 partnering communities have officially incorporated women into their traditional ruler's council, town development unions, vigilante groups, and neighborhood watch groups. To solidify these changes, DEC and the partnering communities are working to enshrine women's participation in community governance structures within their respective constitutions.

Recognizing the importance of women's involvement in politics and governance, Dr. Asogwa called for deliberate legislation that would reserve a specific number of seats for women at various levels of government. She urged political parties and politicians to demonstrate strong political will and prioritize women's issues in their manifestos. DEC pledged to support candidates who align with the women's charter of demand.

The convention witnessed messages of support from royal fathers and representatives of women from Abia, Kogi, Benue, and Enugu states. They commended DEC and Dr. Asogwa for their efforts in empowering women and recognized the positive impact of the organization's initiatives.

Among the highlights of the convention were the presentation of scholarships to 100 indigent girl children, the provision of proficiency and starter packs to 50 skills acquisition graduates, and the recognition of the Ojioforgala Women group as the best-performing group.

DEC's 34th Annual Convention served as a testament to the organization's commitment to empowering women and promoting their active participation in governance. Through advocacy and

impactful initiatives, DEC continues to create opportunities and transform the lives of women in Nigeria, making significant strides toward gender equality and inclusive decision-making processes in communities across the country.
